Preparing walls before painting

Why preparation decides how long your paint job lasts, and the steps we always follow.

Most paint failures start before the first coat. Flaking, patchy colour and visible cracks usually trace back to a surface that was not properly prepared.

Start by cleaning the wall to remove dust, grease and any mould. Fill holes and cracks, let the filler dry fully, then sand it flush so the repair does not show once painted.

Finish with a primer or mist coat on new plaster or heavy repairs. It seals the surface so the topcoat dries evenly and the colour looks the same across the whole wall.
